Presbyopia
Presbyopia is no big deal anymore! We often tell our patients that it happens to everyone at sometime in their 40's. For nearsighted individuals it may happen later, for farsighted individuals it may happen sooner.
Essentially what happens is the lens that flexes or focuses light rays at near while you're reading loses its ability to clear the image at a short working distance. The laws of physiological optics state that the closer you bring an image or light source, the more "accommodation" or "focusing" is necessary to clear the image. Unfortunately the smooth muscles and ligaments that control accommodation lose their magnitude AND speed of flexure as we progress through life. I often tell our patients that presbyopia is so universal, even Jesus would have needed reading glasses if he had lived into his 40's!
Presbyopia is no longer such an annoyance that it used to be. Thanks to Multifocal and Monovision Contact Lenses, as well as the latest Freeform Digital Progressive lenses, presbyopia can be navigated through with either a comfortable pair of quality hip progressives or contact lenses.
